NOUSHIN REDJAIAN (b.1988, AT)

Noushin Redjaian is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist based in Vienna. Her diverse artistic education includes studies in Transmedia Art under Brigitte Kowanz, Graphics and Printmaking, as well as Fashion Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. She was also trained as a carpet and textile restorer, bringing an extensive understanding of materials and craftsmanship to her practice.

Her artistic practice explores the relationship between cultural heritage, materiality, memory and nature. Drawing inspiration from cultural history and poetry, she transforms traditional textiles, found materials and objects into sculptural compositions rich in symbolism and hidden references. Her works create poetic connections between past and present, exploring the tension between fragility and permanence, intuition and memory. Through the reinterpretation of traditional craftsmanship and materials, Redjaian gives familiar objects new meanings and contemporary forms.

She has exhibited in Austria, Italy, France, Bulgaria and Japan, including at MUMOK in Vienna and the Church of San Paolo Converso in Milan. Noushin is the recipient of the Young Artist Award (Bildrecht & Parallel Vienna, 2023–24) and the VCC × viennacontemporary Collectors Prize (2024).

About the exhibited works:

Carpets as a medium refer to a millennia-old cultural history and Indo-Persian traditions, including the Miribota (paisley pattern), protective symbols such as the “salty eye,” and floral motifs as signs of the infinity of life. Historical iconography inspired by cave paintings such as those found in the Cueva de las Manos appears alongside crystal imprints on carpets as part of nonverbal communication. The crystallization of the works seals fleeting moments of human experience, much as cuneiform script preserved ephemeral thoughts on mineral tablets over 4,000 years ago. What of this will endure?
